The Creative District wishes to commission an artist or artist team to develop a unique project in celebration of the Santa Fe Trail Bicentennial Commemorative Event.
The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District (Creative District) is one of many organizations participating in the Santa Fe Trail Bicentennial Commemorative Event, which will successively occur along the original route of the trail throughout 2021. The event will formally take place in Trinidad, Colorado from September 27 – October 3, 2021.
Project Budget: $1,500.00
The Santa Fe Trail was an active Southwest route for trade, immigration and travel between Franklin, Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico between 1821 and 1880. In Colorado, from the Kansas-Colorado border at Highway 50, it travels 188 miles and passes through the towns of Lamar, Las Animas, La Junta and Trinidad until it crosses the Colorado-New Mexico border around I-25. Scattered along this scenic and historic by-way are many ghost towns and remnants of historic settlements which commemorate the history, activities and wildlife of the region.
The Creative District seeks to commission an artist or artistic team to develop and produce a unique project which encompasses all or some of the Colorado portion of the Santa Fe Trail. The project may include any or all of the following: photography, text, video, performance, drawing or painting. The actual product will be negotiated with the commissioned artist or artist-team as part of their contract, based on their proposed medium of choice.
It is the intention of the Creative District to display the work for 8 weeks between September 1 – October 31, 2021; however, given the uncertainty of being able to display actual work during that time, the Creative District reserves the right to present it online.
This project is open to all artists who are legal US residents, age 18 and over, and who reside within the Corazón de Trinidad Creative District’s service area: Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico. There is no entry fee.
The Selection Committee will consist of the Corazon de Trinidad Creative District board members.
Selection criteria to be used for consideration shall include, but not be limited to, the
artistic quality (40%)
evidence of the artist's (or artist-team’s) ability to successfully complete the work as proposed in the timeline (10%)
general experience in similar projects (20%)
thematic originality, especially regarding the regional history of the area and the Santa Fe Trail (30%)
Cover Letter: A one-page cover letter which summarizes the applicant’s interest in this Project and describes a proposed project.
Professional Qualifications: A resume for each applicant (including team members), not longer than 1,000 words. A summary (not more than one page) of experience in any related projects, if applicable.
Supporting Information: Up to 15 examples of artist’s work, which may include images, text or audio files, all in digital format. Supportive information should include the title of the piece, medium, date and dimensions.
The budget for this project is $1,500, which is inclusive of all artist costs related to the artist and/or artist team’s expenditures and costs associated with the art project.
In addition to the physical product produced for an applicant’s commission, the final product will also be delivered in digital form as specified in the contract.

September 1, 2021 Project goes on public display, both on the Creative District website and, if possible, a physical location TBD
October 31, 2021 Project display closes
Artist will retain ownership and copyright of all materials produced; however, artist will also grant Creative District use of all images and materials for educational, marketing, and promotional purposes.

The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District reserves the right to change the dates of the project timeline, to modify this solicitation, to request additional information or proposals from any or all participating artists, and reopen the competition prior to the commissioning of a work.
